Here are my students and my students work results :-) I´m very proud!

As on my other workshops – all the students get workmats for cutting from Nemravka.cz – thank you!

Even if we were there on the begining of summer, it was super hot there! And the grass was mostly burned with hot sun.

Churros – typical spanish breakfast, fried dough, served with hot chocolate (a little bit too greasy for breakfat…)

Workshop Dallas 18–19. 3. 2017

IMG_7749DSC08343 DSC08357IMG_7675

Diane Foster and I have started to plan workshop in Dallas for North Texas Polymer Clay Guild about a year ago. We still had a long time to go and it is now over.

And because I am not one for long talks, here is just few words and a lots of pictures in gallery.

But first of all I want to say thank to all of those who supported this workshop.

Thanks to Polyform products for the clay for our workshop – Premo.

Thanks to Nemravka for the useful craft mats.

I would also like to thank the wonderfull ladies that I have met at the workshop; thank you also for nice presents!

But the biggest thanks goes to Diane, who put her faith in me, invited me to USA and took the best care of me. Big thanks, Diane!

DSC08400 DSC08402

What I was looking forward to the most – kids, bike, and my bed.

IMG_4309

What was the most interesting  to me – the American flags everywhere, wide roads, the recycling system of putting paper in the same container as the plastic; they should do that in Czech as well. For example, almost 100% of toy packaging is both plastic and paper which are almost impossible to separate, here you can just recycle them at the same time. The same goes for envelopes or other wrappings and packaging. Plus organic waste should be composted, not burned.. that is just my insight.

IMG_4290

Co se mi nejvíc líbilo – jeskyně Luray caverns

What I liked the most – Luray caverns

IMG_4235

What surprised me the most – sweet roastbeef, long distances, same low houses. And how polite people are to each other.

IMG_4279

What surprised me the most after retirning home – that Monicka didn`t miss us that much, that I gained 2 kilos, and that someone cleaned my microwave – Thanks Mom!

IMG_4291

What is similar – nature. It surprised me that even in the hot Dallas I didn`t really see any foreign plants such as palms, and no thumbleweed. People, they too have two arms and two legs and their own political and non-political worries.

IMG_4301

What was different – food. Everything is fried and everything has beef in it. I really enjoyed it there but I don`t need to see meat for a bit for now.

IMG_4340

Nejlepší žebra jsem jedla v hospodě v Fredericksburgu a Nejlepší stejky uvařila Diane. Nejlepší krevety – ani nevím. Byly dobré všude.

Top 3 meals – ribs, steaks and shrimp. Meat is considerably cheaper in US than back at home and animals run free range. Best ribs were in the Ale House in Fredericksburg, VA; best steak from Diane; and best shrimp.. I don`t even know. They were good everywhere.

Workshop in Geneva was my very first foreign workshop, so I was not only looking forward to it, but I was preparing myself a lot. Fortunately I used to be home alone so nobody was laughing to me while self speaking in english.

1

It was my first time in Geneve, and actualy it was my second time flying, so please forgive me plane photos – two stewards.

2

Blanc.

Geneve is actualy an “island” surrounded by France, so the mountains on the photo are already French. During good weather you can see Mt. Blanc here.

4

Ženeva leží na břehu úžasného obrovského jezera Lac Leman.

Geneve lies on the shores of great lake – Lac Leman.

7 3

On the shore there are many boats/ships, some of them are also hotels or restaurants.

56

Ženeva má také naprosto nádherné parky (a stromy) a dokonalou horkou čokoládu.

Geneve has absolutely beautiful parks (and treess) and simply perfect hot chocolate.

8

Nejdelší lavička – možná i na světě.

The longest bench – maybe on the world.

1110

To by mě zajímalo, kam to z té výšky padá…..

On the viewpoint in st. Pether´s cathedral (old town dominant) you can find not only view on the city and the lake, but also the bell and toilet for town security.  I´m curious where it goes from this height…

12

Ohrádka pro neplavce. Voda v jezeře je nádherně čistá!

Place for kids – the water in the lake is beautifuly clear!

12a15

Na jezeře najdete mnoho druhů ptáků.

There are many kinds of birds on the lake.

13 14

Maličký majáček a dominanta města – vodotrysk.

Little lighthouse and famous spout. In past it served for releasing pressure from sanitation.

16

It was little bit cold for bike time, but I enjoyed! The city is beautiful.

17 18

Saturday morning we were about to start. Polyform donated all the Premo clay for workshop – thank you! And the girls appreciated. My colour choice was clear, and everybody enjoyed work with Premo clay.

19 20 21 22 23

We started at 9 after a short waiting for the last participant and after it all started. I talked a lot about preparing clay before use, colours etc. It proved that neither blending isn´t as easy as it seem.

26 27

Everybody mixed the colours for his own, most participants used my colour combination. First I teached a faux mosaic technic and after we began with JH rounding technique. Both techniques needs training, so the very first pieces was diffident, but each other was better and better.

28 28c

V plné práci…

Full work…

23a 24 25

Geneva was full of these chocolate pots. This is a tradition raised from a woman who thrown a pot with hot soup down on the enemy. People are filling these pots with marzipan vegetables. Singing, they will break these pots and eat. I like this tradition – and imagine that Swiss chocolate is totaly delicious!

39a

People in Geneve go often to France for food, for examle this chinese “all you can eat” restaurant, but – manger equilibre! Which reminds me that I refreshed my forgotten french :-)

30 32 33 37 38 39

See the results after 2 days workshop – beautiful and regular beads! And I was about to enjoy this view.

39b

A tady vidíte celou naši skupinku, bylo to opravdu velmi milé setkání! Děkuji za příjemnou společnost a za dárečky. Byl to pro mě naprosto úžasný víkend!!!! <3

and here you can see the whole group – it was realy very nice encounter! Thank you for such a nice company, thank you for your kind presents – it was a totaly amazing weekend for me!!! <3

40

On the end of the weekend – a Swiss fondue (yummy) and next time it will be raclette, so I look forward to!

41

A ještě fotka z cesty zpět – poznáte, kde to je? :-)

And on the way back to Prague.

42 43

What else to bring from Switzerland? Chocolates! and one was waiting on me at home, from my sweet heart. Thank you!

What more to say?

Thank you Nathalie and Sylvianne for inviting me, thank you for your care about me. Thank you Maryvonne for your tip :-) and thank you Polyform for all the Premo clay for workshop. Merci!

“JH rounding”

Good morning/evening/afternoon….

Let me introduce to you my technique – I call it:

JH rounding

I use Premo (Sculpey) clay for my projects

Here are some examples made by my technique:

DSC07130dsc0701413528712_10154981829153626_6923727911742280811_n13533305_10155010991818626_1581149739377124674_n13668981_10155030264603626_9045533176708010157_n13754535_10155051073783626_6452616598833872525_n

I simply love them all!

JH rounding comes in few variants:

It is my copyright technique and I´ll not make tutorial before 2020.

The pattern is made ONLY from clay. There is no paint or transfer or anything else – just clay. So it makes every piece the original. Also you can sand and buff.

After you absolve my workshop, you can sell the jewelry you make with my technique. You´re NOT allowed to teach my technique.

Premo clay in various colours (for this project you can use colours you like, use contrasting colours. I used mix (fluorescent pink + white), white, silver and graphite pearl.

Pasta machine, Square cutter (approch 1 inch), Circle cutters, Ruller, Needle tool, Rigid knife, Sculpey liquid, Brush, Scalpel

Step 1

Prepare 4 sheets of clay  on medium settings – contrasting colours. If your clay is sticky, leave it rest between office papers about 5-10 min. You´ll see oily maps on paper. Prepare approx 1¼ inch square made of 2 or 4 colours – see the photo.

2 3 4 5 6

Step 2

Work on a sheet of paper. Mark 1-3 lines with the same distance from the center of the square on both sides – vertical and horizontal separately. Cut out circle cutter on one side – touch the marked line. Do it symetricaly and on both sides. Exchange the cutted semi circles and gently press together. Cut also semicircles on the other mark on the same line, exchange. Cover the square with sheet of paper and and connect pieces together by smoothing the surface.

78 9 10 11 12

Step 3

Turn the square by 90° and repeat step 2.Try to continue the pattern. Cover with a sheet of paper and smoothen the surface – thoroughly this time, but carefuly. Don´t press too much, the pattern may slide! Stop for a while when the clay is too warm (too soft).

When the pattern is ready, cut out a square (approx.1 inch) center the pattern. Make another 5-7 squares like this (depends on your wrist size). You can use 2 or 4 colours, you can use square cutters instead of circles etc.

1314 15 16 17 18

Step 4

Take a long thick sheet of clay for the bracelet base (the colour should be included in the pattern). Mark parallels with your knife – just press your knife flat to the clay, you´ll get always equal lines. Press holes on the marked lines with a needle tool – thick enough, at least 2mm. Cut out of the tile and roll on the bracelet form. Apply sculpey liquid, avoid the holes. If you put liquid in the holes, remove it with needle tool. Dont use too much liquid (as I did) – the pattern squares might slide – if it happens, let the liquid clay dry a bit before applying the pattern.

19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26

Step 5

Take all the pattern squares and press them gently onto the bracelet base. Center the holes. If you used too much liquid, the squares might slide. Wait for a while. Put all the squares onto the base in the right position, dont press them too much on the base – the holes must stay open. Check if all the corners are sticked well onto the base.

Leave the bracelet rest untill the pieces don´t slide. Then cut outline of the pieces – cut just the base clay. You can use knife or scalpel. Remove  leftover clay. Finaly – check if everything is ok (corners sticked, holes open…) and bake the bracelet.

27 28 29 30

Step 6

Do not undervalue finishing – sand pieces from both sides or make backing, buff if needed, choose some cool matching beads, stringe on elastic cord.

Blended sutton slicesutton

Sutton slice technique was invented by Pete Sutton supposedly by a complete accident (as it happens) and Lisa Pavelka desribed it in her book “The Complete Book of Polymer Clay”. This technique has been known for a long time.

In my tutorial I will show you some tricks and shortcuts. That way you can do for example double blended sutton slice and do it fast and simply. In this tutorial I also want to show you the way I make my tutorials and so if you like them, you can buy some of the other paid tutorials (see links below) and support my work this way. Thank you!

I assume that you know some polymer clay basics and that’s why I won’t talk about that. I also won’t number the photos, but you will surely know which photo belongs to what text.

Love, JH.

See my other tutorials:

And now let´s start:

DSC05274DSC05273

You will need a pasta machine, rigid knife, tape, technical or food plastic wrap, texture sheet, thin blended sheet of clay and medium thickmess sheet of clay (I recommend you Premo clay) both the size of the texture sheet. Suitable textures are p.e. cooltools, search for “fineline”

This texture is great for example

DSC05275 DSC05276

Put the texture sheet along with the blended sheet and the wrap (blendedand sheet is inside of the sendwich). Roll through the pasta machine on the thickest setting. Make sure that the sheet doesn`t crumple up in the “sandwich” and that the wrap doesn`t catch on the pasta machine – slowly run through your pasta machine.  The setting may vary based on the thickness of the texture sheet; you may be able to do it on medium setting but mostly on the thickest. When you roll it through it should be bit hard, but you shouldn`t feel too much pressure. Some texture sheet may be even too thick and so be careful not to break down your pasta machine (and also Imperia pasta machines couldn´t “swallow” some thick textures at all, atlas machines can). If needed use a different texture sheet that you can run through the machine.

DSC05277 DSC05279

On this first picture you can see the wrap starting to attach itself onto the machine, you have to stop and unattach it to run it smoothly. Ideally the entire blended sheet is rolled into the texture sheet and the wrap is tightly attached to the polymer.

DSC05280 DSC05282

If the entire blended sheet isn`t rolled into the texture sheet, or just for good measure, run it again through your pasta machine in opposite direction. After that, gently remove the wrap.

DSC05283DSC05285

Cut off a little piece of the polymer to reveal the texture sheet.

DSC05286 DSC05288

With the tape, secure the texture sheet onto your work mat – very tightly, so it doesn`t move.

DSC05289 DSC05292

Cut off the extra clay on the sides. Now, with a rigid knife and a steady hand, cut the blended sheet from the texture sheet – in one stright cut J The knife slides on the texture sheet. Don`t worry, if you have a good quality rubber texture sheet it won`t get destroyed, but just to be sure I recommend older, little dull knife – one that you are comforable working with. Ideally, you should remove the entire blend in one continuous motion. If you don`t succeed at first, you can cut any leftovers in another try (this step needs some practice).

DSC05293  DSC05296

In the first picture you can see the spot where I paused the motion of the knife to take the picture, then the rest is cut in one single motion.

TIP: The cut off piece of polymer will obtain the mica shift pattern if you use metallic/pearl.

TIP: You can use the cut off piece of blend for another sutton slice sheet, use the other side.

DSC05298 DSC05299

VERY FIRMLY press the texture sheet onto the base sheet, first with your fingers then with your palm or an acrylic roller. But beware! The texture sheets are flexible and they tend to bend, so make sure it doesn`t move.

DSC05301DSC05302

Very carefully remove the texture sheet – watch that the entire blended clay is attached to the base sheet. If not, carefully roll the texture sheet back and press on the spot where the layers aren`t attached. It also helps if you press against the bend when you are rolling the texture sheet off.

DSC05304  DSC05303

And voilá, here you have it, your blended sutton slice! The use is up to you!

For buying polymer clay stuff, I recommend to you eshop www.nemravka.cz, you can find there also the texture used

Write me in comments how it turned :-)

What you probably didn´t know about your pasta machine

12987931_10154779768843626_439067062_n

Just to begin: If you don´t how to choose a pasta machine – better are pasta machines with more sheet settings, and also with thicker sheet. I use Atlas pasta machine, and I´m really happy with it. (this is not an advertisment, I just tried few another pasta machines and this is the winner for me). And it is really durable! But sometimes also “cheap” pasta machines do good job.

1:If you don´t switch the settings – the sheet is thinner near the handle and thicker on the opposite side.

2:Also if you need a little bit thinner sheet, roll twice on the same settings.

3:Put the paper tape (for painting walls) on your pasta machine (as you see on the photo) and the clay wouldn´t stick on it. You will appreciate it when rolling long thin sheets.

4:The handle might react with polymer clay. Clean your hands realy often when claying, you´ll also avoid dirt on your pieces! Watter is the best, but wetwipes can serve well.

5:On some pasta machines it is possible to set also between two settings. Don´t be afraid to try it.

6:And on the end – a really tiny tutorial – Make a settings “chart” on a keychain.

Take as many colours as settings on your pasta machine.12969294_10154779768858626_694110214_n

Roll every colour on different settings, roll near the handle. Cut a square out of each colour (I love cutters without join) and write the settings number. Bake it.12966336_10154779768878626_594025222_n

Drill a hole in a corner and stringe on a keychain ring (I used binder rings for better stringing) 12987914_10154779768833626_1024968850_n

That´s it. On the workshops you can check the accurate settings with your own chart and make notes (every pasta machine is different), but you will appreciate it also at home :-)12968622_10154779768793626_888638076_n

Have a nice day, JH.
